What Hiking Taught Me About Building Distributed AI Systems

Here is something that rarely comes up in architecture reviews: when our systems are green, my family and I are usually out hiking.

Whenever a deployment is stable and the alerts are quiet, my wife, kids and I head for the mountains. Every trail reinforces the same rule: reaching the summit fast means nothing if you burn the team, miss the weather shift, or skip the route check. What matters is preparation, observation, clear roles, and steady decision-making all the way up.

As a systems builder, I do not see a hike as just a recreational activity.

Every trail is a living system.

Some people lead.

Some navigate.

Some monitor safety.

Some carry the gear.

Each person owns a different job, but the whole team moves toward the same objective.

Over the years, I have come to see the same pattern in how we should build AI.

Too many organisations still try to make one model or one LLM do everything: monitor servers, check security, generate reports, and make strategic calls.

That is like asking one hiker to lead the expedition, carry all the packs, read the weather, prepare food, and keep the group together.

It works...

...until it does not.

At AINNA, that observation is one of the reasons we built Detached Systems inside NeuralOps.

Instead of routing every repetitive operational task through an LLM, Detached Systems run that work continuously and autonomously:

• Monitor cybersecurity events

• Detect abnormal server behaviour

• Watch for DNS anomalies and DDoS indicators

• Track SEO and website health

• Validate system configurations

• Collect evidence and operational metrics

The AI agent only steps in when reasoning, judgement, or strategic decision-making is actually needed.

The result is a leaner, more scalable, and more resilient architecture-one that spends AI resources on thinking, not on repeatedly checking the same signals.

Ironically, one of the best architecture lessons I have picked up did not come from a data centre.

It came from the mountains.

Nature has been running distributed intelligence long before we started building Artificial Intelligence.

This is where reaching the summit fast means finally clicks.
