While We Argue, The Future Is Already Working

We are still debating Gen Z vs Millennials. We argue about work ethic, Work From Home versus Work From Office, and which generation is more committed. Meanwhile, the rest of the world has quietly moved on to a much bigger conversation: how technology is changing work itself.

Take China's Chongqing East Railway Station as an example. AI, robotics, LiDAR, automation and 5G have transformed the way large infrastructure projects are delivered-improving productivity, reducing manual labour requirements and reportedly reducing safety incidents by around 90%. The discussion is no longer about who does the work, but how the work gets done.

The uncomfortable reality is that we are preparing people for yesterday's workplace while tomorrow's workplace is already being built. Many organisations are still optimising attendance, job descriptions and reporting structures, while AI is learning workflows, analysing data and supporting decisions at a pace that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago.

For decades, we believed that the most valuable people would always be the smartest, the most educated or the most experienced. Those qualities still matter, but they are no longer enough on their own. Increasingly, value belongs to those who know how to combine human judgement with AI and technology to produce better outcomes.

The biggest misconception is that AI will replace humans. It probably won't not directly. But a small team equipped with AI, automation and efficient systems can now achieve what once required much larger teams. The competition is no longer simply human versus machine; it is people who leverage technology versus people who do not.

Ironically, we created technology to make work easier. We wanted fewer repetitive tasks, faster processes and greater convenience. Yet by making work dramatically more efficient, we have also changed the economics of work itself. Companies will naturally ask whether they still need the same number of people to produce the same results.

Perhaps we are debating the wrong question. The future will not be decided by Gen Z versus Millennials, or WFH versus the office. It will be shaped by those who move beyond merely using AI and learn to master it. In the years ahead, the greatest advantage will not belong to the person with the highest IQ, but to the person who knows how to amplify intelligence through technology.
