A reference range is not a pass or fail mark
Laboratory ranges describe values expected for a defined reference population and can differ by method, age, sex or pregnancy. A result just outside a range may not indicate disease, while a result inside a range does not exclude every condition. Interpretation belongs with symptoms, examination and previous results.
Preparation can affect results
Confirm whether fasting, timing or temporary medicine instructions apply. Do not fast or stop medicine unless instructed. Tell the clinician about supplements, recent illness, intense exercise, pregnancy and the time of the last dose where relevant.
Common panels such as a full blood count, kidney or liver tests, glucose and lipids contain several measures. Avoid drawing conclusions from one flagged item or comparing results from different laboratories without context.
Close the follow-up loop
Ask when results should be ready, who will explain them and whether repeat or confirmatory testing is needed. Keep copies with units and reference ranges. If symptoms worsen while waiting, seek clinical advice rather than waiting only for the report.
