Symptoms vary widely
Perimenopause and menopause can affect menstrual patterns, temperature regulation, sleep, mood, concentration, joints, sexual wellbeing and vaginal or urinary comfort. Not every symptom in midlife is caused by menopause, so new, severe or persistent problems should be assessed.
Choose care through an individual discussion
Options may include lifestyle measures, non-hormonal treatments, vaginal treatments or menopausal hormone therapy. Benefits and risks depend on symptoms, age, health history, type of treatment and personal preference. Herbal products can interact with medicines and their quality varies.
Continue health checks appropriate to your age and risk, including bone and cardiovascular health discussions where relevant. Menopause does not remove the need for contraception immediately; ask for individual advice.
Bleeding deserves attention
Changing periods can occur during perimenopause, but very heavy, persistent or unusual bleeding should not simply be attributed to hormones. Any vaginal bleeding after menopause needs medical assessment.
