Most sore throats are short-lived

Sore throats commonly accompany viral infections and often improve with fluids, rest and suitable pain relief. Antibiotics are not routinely helpful for viral illness. A clinician may examine the throat and consider testing when symptoms, age or examination findings suggest another cause.

Snoring is not the whole diagnosis

Snoring alone does not prove obstructive sleep apnoea. Repeated pauses in breathing, gasping, unrefreshing sleep, morning headaches or marked daytime sleepiness are reasons to seek assessment. A sleep history from someone who observes the sleeper can be useful.

Avoid driving or hazardous work if sleepiness makes it unsafe. Alcohol and sedating medicines can worsen sleep-related breathing in some people; discuss medicines rather than stopping them independently.

Prepare useful observations

Record how long throat symptoms have lasted and whether swallowing, voice, breathing or neck swelling has changed. For sleep concerns, note snoring frequency, witnessed pauses, sleep schedule and daytime effects. These details support assessment but do not replace it.

At a glance

Key takeaways

  • Most uncomplicated sore throats do not require antibiotics.
  • Witnessed breathing pauses and significant daytime sleepiness merit assessment.
  • Do not drive when sleepiness affects alertness.

When to seek care

  • Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a rapidly increasing neck swelling, blue lips or severe drowsiness.
  • Arrange review for a sore throat that persists or repeatedly returns, or for suspected sleep apnoea.
