Different tests answer different questions
X-rays use ionising radiation and are commonly used for bones and the chest. CT uses X-rays to create detailed cross-sectional images. Ultrasound uses sound waves and does not use ionising radiation. The best test depends on the clinical question, not simply which machine is most advanced.
Information to share before imaging
Tell the team if you may be pregnant, have allergies, kidney problems, diabetes, implanted devices, or a previous reaction to contrast. Follow instructions about eating, drinking and medicines. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the referring or imaging team tells you to.
After the test
A radiology report describes imaging findings for the referring clinician, who considers them alongside your history, examination and other tests. Ask when the report should be available and whom to contact. Incidental findings may sometimes require follow-up.
