A lump needs confirmation
A hernia may appear as a lump that becomes more noticeable when standing, coughing or straining, sometimes with discomfort. Not every lump is a hernia, and the type, location, symptoms and effect on daily life influence management.
Reduce strain while arranging advice
Avoid activities that clearly provoke pain, but routine gentle movement is usually preferable to unnecessary bed rest. Address constipation and persistent cough with appropriate clinical advice. A support garment does not repair a hernia and should not delay assessment.
Surgery may be recommended for some symptomatic or higher-risk hernias. Ask about the proposed approach, anaesthesia, important risks, alternatives, recovery and what may happen without surgery.
Know the emergency pattern
A hernia that becomes suddenly very painful, firm or tender, cannot be reduced as previously, or occurs with vomiting or abdominal swelling may be trapped or obstructed. Do not forcefully push it and do not wait for a routine appointment.

Key takeaways
- Have a new or changing lump clinically assessed.
- A support garment does not cure a hernia.
- Sudden pain with vomiting or an irreducible lump is an emergency warning sign.
When to seek care
- Seek emergency care for sudden severe pain, vomiting, abdominal swelling, inability to pass stool or gas, or a firm tender hernia that no longer reduces.
- Arrange surgical review for a new, enlarging, painful or activity-limiting lump.
