Screening is not the same as diagnosis
Screening checks people who do not have symptoms for a higher chance of a condition. A positive result usually means more assessment is needed; it is not automatically a diagnosis. A negative result does not guarantee that a condition is absent.
Choose tests for your risk
Age, sex, 怀孕, family history, smoking, medicines and existing conditions can change which tests are appropriate. Ask what each test looks for, whether guidelines recommend it for you, and whether preparation such as fasting is required. More tests are not always better because false positives and incidental findings can cause further procedures or anxiety.
Plan for the result
Before testing, ask when and how results will arrive, what the reference range means, and who will explain an abnormal result. Keep a copy and attend recommended follow-up. Symptoms still need assessment even after a reassuring screening result.
