Numbers need context
High blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol levels may cause no symptoms. One unusual reading does not always establish a diagnosis: clinicians consider repeat measurements, testing conditions, other illnesses and overall cardiovascular risk. Cholesterol results include several components rather than one number.
Build reliable habits
If checking blood pressure at home, use a validated upper-arm monitor with the correct cuff size and follow the recommended seated technique. Record readings without changing medicine yourself. A balanced eating pattern, regular activity, avoiding tobacco, moderating alcohol and taking prescribed medicine consistently can reduce risk.
Ask how diabetes, kidney disease, family history and smoking affect your treatment target. Supplements should not replace prescribed treatment or evidence-based lifestyle care.
Plan follow-up
Know when readings and blood tests should be repeated, what side effects to report and whom to contact. Bring your medicine list and home record to appointments. Very high readings with concerning symptoms require urgent assessment rather than another routine check.
At a glance
Key takeaways
- Blood pressure and cholesterol can be abnormal without symptoms.
- Use correct home-monitoring technique and share the record with a clinician.
- Do not stop cardiovascular medicine because one reading looks normal.
When to seek care
- Seek emergency care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, new weakness, new speech difficulty or a severe unusual headache.
- Arrange review for repeatedly high home readings, medicine side effects or missed follow-up tests.
