Masalah sinus

Overview

Sinuses are air spaces around the nose. Inflammation can follow a cold, allergy or structural blockage. Lasting or one-sided symptoms should be checked.

Common symptoms

• Blocked or runny nose
• Facial pressure or reduced smell
• Post-nasal drip or cough
• Recurrent infections

Possible causes

• Viral colds
• Allergic rhinitis
• Bacterial sinusitis
• A deviated septum or other blockage

When to seek medical help

• High fever, swelling around the eye, or severe headache
• Symptoms lasting more than 10 days or returning often
• One-sided blockage or bleeding

Diagnosis

ENT examination may include nasal endoscopy. Imaging is used only when the specialist judges it necessary.
