What to Look for When Choosing an OEM Manufacturing Partner

From the Sari Tani Desa Knowledge Centre.

Bringing a herbal product to market under your own brand means choosing a factory to manufacture it for you. That choice shapes your product’s quality, timelines and reputation — so it deserves the same care as the formulation itself.

Capability first

Start with the basics: can the manufacturer actually make your product? For traditional herbal products, that means the right dosage forms — capsules, creams, liquids or powders — and the equipment to fill, pack and finish them. A partner who can accommodate your current product and your likely next product is worth more than one locked into a single format.

Quality control culture

Quality claims are easy to make and harder to demonstrate. Look for a manufacturer whose quality approach is visible in how they talk about their work: inspection of raw materials, controlled weighing and processing, documented batches and release checks. A factory that treats quality as a step at the end of the line is different from one that builds it into every stage.

Regulatory experience

In Malaysia, traditional products in scope must be registered with the NPRA before they may be sold. A manufacturer who has guided products through registration — and can advise on formulations, packaging and documentation — will save you the expense of learning those lessons the hard way.

Communication and transparency

Manufacturing is a relationship, not a transaction. The right partner will discuss your requirement honestly, explain what is realistic and confirm what they will deliver, rather than promising anything to win the order. Transparency about timelines, materials and process is a reliable early signal.

How to approach your first conversation

Prepare before you approach a contract manufacturer. Write down the product type, the formula status, the quantity you are planning, whether you will supply raw materials, the packaging you need and the market you are targeting. A structured brief gets a far more useful response than a vague “can you make this?”

Our Smart OEM Product Planner is designed exactly for this — it helps you collect these details into a preliminary manufacturing requirement you can share with your chosen partner.
